RETIRED
PRESSMAN TAKES ON
THE WORLD OF ART
North Haven artist Eugene Teixeira sits in one of
his favorite places: his studio.
A retired printing press operator, Teixerira, 64, is now pursuing
his passion for painting. Several of his paintings are currently
on display at Memorial Town Hall in Hamden.

Some see retirement as a way to end a life of work.
Eugene Teixeira saw retirement as a way to begin his life's work.
Teixeira, 64, is living the life e always wanted -
as an artist. The North Haven resident happily gave up his printing
press job of 30 years to go to art school and study the only subject
he ever loved.
"I just have to paint whatever inspires me. I
never anted to do anything else," he said.
The pressman-turned-painter is getting recognized
as a serious artist. He was the only artist from Connecticut to
place in a national competition sponsored by The Artist's Magazine.
His former professors at Paier College of Art say he's among the
best artists they've ever seen. Some of his fans are lobbying
to show his work in the state Capitol.
For now, Memorial Town Hall in Hamden will have to
do. About two dozen of Teixeira's paintings are displayed in the
offices as part of the town's local artist showcase series.
"I have so man people come in here and are amazed
by the caliber of the work," Hamden Town Clerk Vera Morrison
said. "I'll keep 'em here as long as he'll let me."
By fall 1993, Teixeira enrolled in Paier College of
Art in Hamden. Fine Arts professor John Falato said he was impressed
with Teixeira's passion, talent and work ethic.
"He really had it in his blood." Falato
said."I can see him mounting a major show very easily."
